Oahu - Pearl Harbor

We came to Oahu  to visit our friends Cindy and her son, Kai.  While on Oahu we went to the USS Arizona Memorial, saw a few sites, then went snorkeling in Turtle Bay, where we stayed on the North Shore.

Mongoose ('Iole manakuke) hanging around Pearl Harbor.  There's a great article about the history of how the mongoose came to the Hawaiian Islands on InstantHawaii.com.  They were brought to the islands to control the rat population.  Problem is, rats are nocturnal and the mongoose is diurnal. They are basically unwanted because, while their diet is primarily insects,  they also eat small the eggs of ground-nesting birds. They are not a welcome sight on the Hawaiian Islands.

Mongoose let us get close
